On September 6, 1977, The National Commission for the Protection of Human Subjects of Biomedical and Behavioral Research published a groundbreaking report entitled Research Involving Children (see:, which upended previous guidelines in The Nuremberg Code prohibiting research on children, and took into consideration potential benefits of controversial pediatric trials ranging from the Willowbrook trial to the polio vaccine trials. Dr. Rosenthal will review the historical reasons for the 1977 report, the Commissioners’ methodology, and discuss how the report has shaped pediatric research for the last 40 years, including cases such as Lorenzo’s Oil (see: and  and the recent Charlie Gard case (see:   

After completion of this activity, participants will be able to:
1. Review the history of pediatric research in the United States.  
2. Evaluate the influence of the 1977 report in the last 40 years on non-therapeutic and therapeutic research on children. 
3. Discuss the ethical, legal and societal impact of pediatric research.
