“The good physician treats the disease; the great physician treats the patient who has the disease.” William Osler
At the University of Kentucky College of Medicine, we have the privilege to educate future physicians and scientists in a transformational academic environment with innovative research and state-of-the-art patient care.
We are committed to serve the Commonwealth and beyond through the translation, application, and dissemination of research discovery; committed to enhancing diversity and inclusivity, to best provide education and care to an increasingly diverse local and global community; committed to innovative science and technology, to promote health and wellness with a deep community engagement; and, as indicated in the quote above by Sir William Osler, committed to efforts to understand the individual and the biology of each illness, with a more precise (or precision medicine) approach.
Having my own career focused on bridging and aligning multidisciplinary research, I have been guided by an overall responsibility to patients and the community to create impact and value for health care. I am excited to further develop the opportunities available here at the UK College of Medicine. These opportunities include a focus on life-long learning; strong scientific discovery; translation of multidisciplinary science for the best value for patients; and the high quality and value of academic medical care in keeping with our responsibility to meet the needs of the Commonwealth of Kentucky and beyond.
The College of Medicine’s educational programs are fully accredited and we have been nationally recognized for innovation and leadership for many years. Our curriculum focuses on early clinical experiences; clinical and basic science integration in our systems-based approach; active learning experiences to promote habits of lifelong learning; and a commitment to the highest ideals of our profession with a focus on the patient’s experience. Graduates from our medical school are competitive for the most sought after residency positions in the country, and are well prepared for clinical practice, academic opportunities, and a lifetime of service.
Adding to the educational experience, the College of Medicine has a commitment to the implementation of transdisciplinary and translational research; and the application of science and technology (such as genomic science and precision medicine) for optimal patient care. With the escalating growth of technology and scientific discovery, the value of an educational experience at a multidisciplinary and well-integrated academic medical center is unmatched. As a hub of team-based science and cutting-edge, translational research impacting the delivery of care to patients and populations, this integrated approach will be critically important to future physicians and scientists.
With an emphasis on integrated team approaches to research, education and care, our cross-campus experiences are available for students at all levels. With the advanced medical expertise of UK HealthCare, and multiple integrated and programmatic state-of-the art colleges, centers, institutes, hospitals, and other facilities, we are truly able to create lasting impact to health care.
To name a few examples, these opportunities include our six health profession colleges (Medicine, Pharmacy, Dentistry, Public Health, Health Sciences, and Nursing); UK Chandler Hospital; Kentucky Children’s Hospital; UK Good Samaritan Hospital; UK Markey Cancer Center; Gill Heart Institute; UK Transplant Center; Women’s Health OB-GYN program; and the Kentucky Neuroscience Institute; and additional collaborative partnerships with colleges such as Social Work, Engineering, Communication and Information, Business and Economics, Education, Law, Design, Arts and Sciences, Fine Arts, and Agriculture, Food and Environment.
Future growth includes the upcoming construction of a multidisciplinary research building that will further fuel interdisciplinary scientific discovery and impact patients and populations as well as further adding to educational opportunities.
As a pillar of our strategic plan, we have expanded community engagement and partnerships to create additional opportunities for learning in rural settings, global opportunities, and are leveraging leading-edge technologies such as genomic science and precision medicine, clinical trials, and education to define cutting-edge expertise and treatments to help address patient and public needs.
With these exciting times and opportunities for research, education, and state-of-the art clinical care in academic medicine, it is a great privilege to welcome you to the University of Kentucky College of Medicine.
