I am an academic physician with broad experience in clinical care of critically ill infants and children in the perioperative period, administration of academic organizations, and creation and oversight of patient safety structures in academic medical centers. Over the course of my career, I have gained experience in virtually every aspect of the life of a medical school or academic medical center including finance, personnel management, and dispute resolution. In addition, I have broad experience in the management of hospitals, perioperative services, and academic medical centers.
I have developed special skills in communicating with enterprise personnel and have been tasked often with faculty and staff development, conflict management, and mentoring by enterprise administrative and academic leadership. Many times I have been asked to manage difficult, politically sensitive issues, some involving significant liability for the academic enterprise. In the course of managing risk, I have become an expert in patient safety and have developed programs successful in the mitigation of risk with corresponding improvement in outcome in large academic institutions.
A dedicated clinician and teacher, I am at my best when I am educating the next generation of physicians about the human side of managing the sickest infants and children. Clinically my training and experience includes pediatrics, pediatric critical care, pediatric anesthesia for healthy and critically ill children.
I am often called upon to manage complex projects such as mortality reduction, reinventing the financial services of a large medical group, building a successful department of anesthesiology out of a failing group in a large children's hospital, and reviving the perioperative services of a large academic medical centerr.
